Character Counts with and Without Spaces

Characters with spaces: The total number of all characters, including spaces, punctuation, and line breaks. This is the standard used by most social media platforms when enforcing character limits. When X (Twitter) says you have 280 characters, it counts every space.

Characters without spaces: The total count excluding space characters. This is used for some word processing word count requirements, certain academic citation formats, and some CMS systems that measure content density.

Does character count include spaces? Yes, for social media platform limits. Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, TikTok, and YouTube all count spaces toward their character limits. When checking whether a caption fits, use the characters-with-spaces count.

Instagram Character Counter

Instagram has several distinct text fields with different character limits. The character counter handles all of them:

Instagram caption: 2,200 characters maximum. Instagram truncates captions in the feed at approximately 125 characters on mobile and 218 characters on desktop before showing the "more" option. The most important text, the hook or the key message, should appear within the first 125 characters.

Instagram bio: 150 characters maximum. Unlike captions, the bio displays in full on the profile page without truncation. Every character counts in a 150-character bio.

Instagram comment: 2,200 characters maximum, matching the caption limit.

Instagram word counter: Instagram does not enforce a word limit only a character limit. However, the feed truncation threshold of 125 characters corresponds to approximately 18 to 22 words depending on word length.

Threads Character Counter

Threads (Meta's text-based platform) allows up to 500 characters per post. Threads shows a circular progress indicator in the compose view that fills as you approach the 500-character limit and turns red when exceeded. Use the character counter to draft and check Threads posts before opening the app.

TikTok and Bluesky Character Counters

TikTok captions: 2,200 characters maximum. The visible portion before "more" is approximately 150 characters. The first line of a TikTok caption functions as the hook keep it within 150 characters for maximum impact.

Bluesky posts: 300 characters maximum. All 300 characters display in the feed without truncation. URLs pasted into Bluesky posts count toward the 300-character limit and are not automatically shortened.

Does character count include spaces?

Yes. All major social media platforms count spaces as characters when enforcing their limits. X (Twitter), Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Threads, and Bluesky all include spaces in their character counts. The character counter shows both "with spaces" and "without spaces" counts use the "with spaces" figure for social media character limit checks.

Approximately 14 to 17 words, assuming average English word length. Word count varies based on the specific words used. A sentence with many short words (a, the, it, is) will have more words per 100 characters than one with longer words. The character counter shows both character count and word count simultaneously so you can check both.

A 280-character X (Twitter) post contains approximately 40 to 50 words at average English word length. A typical tweet uses 15 to 25 words in practice, leaving room for links, hashtags, and username mentions.

Instagram captions allow up to 2,200 characters. However, Instagram truncates captions in the feed at approximately 125 characters on mobile before showing "more." Write your most important information, the hook, the key message, or the call to action within the first 125 characters to ensure it is visible without a tap.
