Tweet generator

Tweet like a pro for free & maximize your networking efforts.

ContentStudio's free Twitter hashtag generator produces relevant hashtags for your X (Twitter) posts based on your topic, niche, or keyword input. Enter a description of your post and the tool returns a set of hashtags calibrated for X's search and trending systems. If you also schedule your X posts, you can plan your X content and manage hashtags alongside your publishing calendar in one place.

How to Use the Twitter Hashtag Generator

  1. Enter a short description of your post, topic, or campaign. One sentence works.
  2. Click Generate to produce a set of hashtag suggestions.
  3. Review the results and select the ones relevant to your specific post.
  4. Copy and paste them into your X post before publishing.

The generator produces hashtags at different popularity levels: broad high-volume terms for reach and niche-specific terms for targeted discoverability. Using a mix of both in the same post performs better than using only popular hashtags.

How to Create a Hashtag on X

Creating a hashtag on X requires no special setup, approval, or registration. Any word or phrase preceded by the # symbol becomes a clickable hashtag on the platform. The mechanics are straightforward:

To create a hashtag in a post:

  1. Type the # symbol directly before any word or phrase with no space between # and the first letter.
  2. Do not include spaces within a hashtag. #SocialMedia works; #Social Media does not.
  3. Numbers are allowed (#2026, #Top10). Special characters (!, @, &) are not allowed and break the hashtag at that character.
  4. Capitalization does not affect function. #ContentMarketing and #contentmarketing link to the same feed, but mixed-case hashtags (also called CamelCase) are easier to read and are the convention for multi-word hashtags.
  5. Post the tweet. X automatically hyperlinks the hashtag and indexes it in the hashtag feed.

To create a branded hashtag for a campaign: A branded hashtag is one specific to your brand, product, or campaign that you introduce and encourage others to use. There is no registration process on X. You create it by using it first and promoting it consistently. Before launching a branded hashtag, search it on X to confirm it is not already in use with a different meaning.

Character count: X counts each character in a hashtag, including the # symbol, toward the 280-character post limit (or 25,000 for Premium). A hashtag like #ContentMarketing uses 16 characters. Factor this into post length planning when using multiple hashtags.

How Many Hashtags to Use on X

X does not enforce a limit on the number of hashtags per post, but performance data consistently shows that 1 to 2 hashtags per post produces higher engagement than posts with more. This differs significantly from Instagram, where up to 30 hashtags are common.

The reasons for the lower optimal count on X:

  • X posts have a 280-character limit for standard accounts. Multiple hashtags consume character space that could be used for the post content itself.
  • Posts with many hashtags read as low-quality or spammy to X's audience. User behavior on X skews toward text-forward content.
  • X's algorithm weights genuine engagement signals (replies, retweets, bookmarks) more than hashtag discovery for distribution. Overloading hashtags does not proportionally increase reach.

For most posts, 1 hashtag is sufficient for search discoverability. Use 2 when the post legitimately covers two distinct topics. Use a third only for event-specific or trending hashtag participation.

Trending Hashtags on X

Trending hashtags on X are determined by an algorithm that measures the volume and velocity of posts using a specific hashtag in a given time window, relative to the account's location and interest settings. A hashtag trending in the United States may not appear in trending lists for users set to a different region.

How to find trending hashtags on X:

  1. Open X and tap Explore (on mobile) or click the Explore icon on the left sidebar (desktop).
  2. The Trending section shows the current top hashtags and topics for your location and interest profile.
  3. To see trends for a specific location, go to Explore settings and switch the location to the country or city you want.

What is the difference between a Twitter hashtag and an X hashtag?

They are the same thing. Twitter rebranded to X in 2023. The hashtag system, the # symbol convention, the character rules, and the trending algorithm are all unchanged under the new name. Hashtags created before the rebrand continue to work. Searches for "twitter hashtag" and "x hashtag" refer to the same feature on the same platform.
Type a # followed by your brand name, campaign name, or a phrase that identifies your campaign. Search it on X first to confirm no one else is using it with a different meaning. Start using it consistently in your posts and include it in any campaign materials. There is no registration or ownership process on X - the convention is that whoever uses and promotes a hashtag first establishes its association.
Technically yes, but using the same hashtag set on every post produces diminishing returns. X's algorithm does not penalize hashtag repetition directly, but audiences who follow a hashtag may see less variety if every post from your account appears in that feed. Varying hashtags slightly across posts while maintaining niche relevance produces broader reach over time.
X's native search does not display exact usage counts per hashtag. Clicking on a hashtag in any post opens the hashtag feed showing recent and top posts, but no aggregate count. Third-party hashtag tracking tools provide volume data. X previously offered this in Twitter Analytics but removed the feature; it is not currently available natively.
A hashtag trends when a high volume of posts using it accumulates within a short time window, relative to baseline activity and the user's location and interest settings. Organic events (news, sports, cultural moments) produce the fastest trending movement. For brand campaigns, coordinated launch timing where many accounts post with the same hashtag in a short window can push a hashtag into trending - though this requires significant reach or coordination.
